Installing a 12v Trolling Motor System

Installing a 12v Trolling Motor System

Installing a 12V trolling motor system with a Southeast Lithium battery involves several steps. Below is a general guide, but it's important to note that the specific instructions may vary depending on the model and brand of your trolling motor and  specific boat configuration. Always refer to the manufacturer's instructions for your specific equipment.

Materials Needed:

  1. Trolling motor
  2. Southeast Lithium battery (12V)
  3. Battery cables
  4. Circuit breaker or fuse
  5. Disconnect switch (optional, but recommended for safety)
  6. Wires, connectors, and crimping tools
  7. Drill and appropriate drill bits
  8. Screwdriver and wrench set
  9. Zip ties or cable clamps

Steps:

Choose the Right Battery:

Ensure that the Southeast Lithium battery you choose is 12V and has enough capacity to power your trolling motor for your desired duration. Check out our battery selection guide to make sure you have the proper lithium option for your trolling motor setup.

Install the Battery:

Using the included mounting brackets, install the Southeast Lithium battery in a location that is right for your specific boat. The mounting brackets now make it easy to install your lithium battery on places like console or hatch walls, underneath a front deck, etc. We always recommend installing the battery as close as possible to the trolling motor to ensure a shorter run of wiring, but we understand that's not always possible.

Determine the Wiring Route:

Plan the route for your wiring, making sure it is secure and away from any moving parts. Zip ties are your best friend here and often times you can follow along any current wiring in the boat to maintain a clean look.

Install Circuit Protection

Install a circuit breaker or fuse between the battery and the trolling motor. This protects your equipment from electrical faults.

Connect the Battery Cables:

Connect the positive (+) and negative (-) battery cables to the corresponding terminals on the Southeast Lithium battery. Use the appropriate connectors and ensure tight connections.

Connect the Trolling Motor:

Connect the trolling motor leads to the corresponding terminals on the battery cables. Positive to positive, and negative to negative.

Install Disconnect Switch (Optional):

Install a disconnect switch between the battery and the trolling motor for added safety. This allows you to easily cut power to the motor when not in use.

Secure and Organize Wiring:

Use zip ties or cable clamps to secure the wiring and prevent it from interfering with the motor's operation.

Test the System:

Turn on the battery, and test the trolling motor to ensure it is functioning properly.

Double-Check Connections:

Double-check all connections and ensure everything is secure. Make sure there are no loose wires or exposed conductors. We recommend applying some dialectic grease to all connections for increased protection from the harsh saltwater environment.

Always follow the specific guidelines provided by the manufacturers of your trolling motor and any additional components.
